GPS cat collars

Cats often have the pesky habit of sneaking out leaving us worried sick waiting for them to come home. GPS cat collars are a great solution for anyone with a feline friend. These handy devices have already been usedfor many years with dogs but have only recently become small enough for use in adult cats.

Tracking types

The tracking feature of these devices is similar to those of other devices, like the black box in your car, your sport’s watch, and of course, your smartphone, all of which are based on GPS technology. This technology works very differently from other types of tracking device. One of the most widespread systems uses RFID technology and Bluetooth Low Energy. Without going into too much detail, take Apple’s AirTag as an example of this class of technology. It is a small and relatively cheap device that allows you to track keys, wallets and frequently misplaced household items. While some people opt to use these kinds of tags to track their cats, the technology has a very limited range which is fine for locating small objects at home but is much less effective for animals that can wander far and wide.

Which GPS collar to choose?

GPS cat collars are the only viable solution. the Global Positioning System – as the name suggests – is a worldwide system with an unlimited range thanks to the constellation of satellites that supports this technology. In its most modern format GPS tracking is assisted by other features, likeGLONASS. This is the Russian GPS counterpart. By combining the results of the two systems, the location data is much more precise. It is further enhanced using Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and GSM. These are mainly used to allow communication between GPS cat collars and the receiver, but can also provide useful data on the location.
